A Chinese Catholic priest who is based in Manila succumbed to Covid-19 on Monday, according to Radio Veritas Asia.

Fr. Lawrence Liu Hong’en died of the disease at a state-run hospital in Quezon City. He was 45.

Born in China’s Shan’xi province, Fr. Liu studied at Xi’an seminary and was ordained priest in 2007.

The priest came to the Philippines after ordination to study at the Institute for Consecrated Life in Asia.

Fr. Liu tested positive for the coronavirus on July 1 and had undergone medical observation.

RVA also reported that the priest has already been vaccinated against the coronavirus in June.

Fr. Liu had assisted several Chinese people who wanted to study in the Philippines and those who wanted to do pilgrimage in the country.

Fr. Liu’s family would not be able to attend his funeral in Manila due to the health restrictions.

The Chinese Catholic community in the Philippines also appealed for prayers for the departed priest.
